We have survived our first two weeks back at school with students. Today is Friday afternoon (oh, wait. It's evening now. I stayed at work until 5:30 tonight.) Anyhow, as I was entering grades, organizing, correcting reading logs, etc. I had to ponder what a success the first two weeks have been, for the both of us. Working with youth is truly an amazing experience; however, it's frightening to realize how fragile, honest, and impressionable they are.
This is now my 5th year of teaching, and things get better every year. I truly learn from my students and instantly identify how I can improve for the following year.
Teenagers (with or without a disability) are not the enigma most adults believe them to be. Teens speak exactly what is on their minds (albeit we may not always want to hear what they have to say) but at least they are more honest than some adults that I know!
On another note: we had an assembly today with one of The Lost Boys of Sudan. I got to meet Akol Aguek and hear his story in person- very powerful!
