As for the celebration at home, we kept it simple. I did splurge on "Happy 1st Birthday" plates, cups, napkins, and a banner, in addition to balloons and an ice cream cake, but otherwise it was low key. I wasn't quite sure what to expect as I have never thrown a birthday party before, but it was fun and there was only one catastrophe. Unfortunately, the catastrophe involved the cake! I picked it up the day before and had everything ready to go because I did NOT want to have to mess with anything on the BIG day. I bought the cake, refrigerated it and got all the decorations out, hung the banner, made plans with Grandma to come over, etc. All set to go! Nothing to prepare on his birthday itself...we were ready for a stress-free celebration!
*If you did not catch the major mistake I made described above, then you are as unobservant as I am :) Apparently, ice cream cakes don't go in the refrigerator. They must remain frozen. I did not know this (or pay attention to the giant label on the cake that said KEEP FROZEN) until it was literally time to get the cake out, light the candle, and cut it for Jake, me, Mark, and Grandma. Needless to say the cake was unrecognizable...a melted mass of frosting and ice cream.
*Enter panic*
Actually, I didn't do too bad. I got in the car, drove to Safeway, and picked up another cake, kicking myself the entire time.
With the new cake in tow we lit the candle, sang a joyous version of "Happy Birthday", enjoyed a great big mess, gave Jake a birthday bath, then opened presents.
All in all he was one happy little boy. He enjoyed his new little bench seat and tub toys most of all, but he did get spoiled rotten...
Happy, happy birthday Dear Jake. We love you more than you will ever know!

Thank goodness for Safeway, huh? Every party has to have a catastrophe. Happy birthday to Jake! He's adorable.

I can't believe it's already been a year. It seems like I was just updating myself about his pregnancy and now you have another on the way. Crazy how time flies!
